6.2 Building a customer base

One of the hardest parts of starting a food business is building a loyal customer base – regular customers who come back for the same food and experience. It’s obviously important for the food to be delicious (we’ll leave that to you!), but there are other things you can do to give your customers a great experience and leave them wanting to come back for more! 

Top tips: #

  • Make sure you approve orders and reply to enquiries quickly. If you take a while to approve an order in the platform or get back to your customers query, they might not choose to order from you again. We suggest you have your emails on your phone, and ensure you have your notifications switched on.
  •  Take the time to chat to your customer when they collect/ you deliver the food. Our customers care about the person behind the food, so do make sure you greet them with a smile on your face.


  •  Why not think about including a complimentary dessert or snack for all first-time customers? The smallest things can make a big difference in the long run.
  • Similarly, take note of return customers and reward them with something small after a certain number of orders – it could be upgrading their portion size or including a little taster of something new in their next order.
  • Update your menu regularly, with weekly/monthly specials to keep your customers excited to try something new.
